GENERAL TIPS

Skip tough questions and come back to them later

If you find that you’re taking too much time on a particular question, put down your best guess first, circle the question and move on to other questions. Come back to this question later when you are done with the other easier questions.

If you are unsure of something, ask the teacher

Read each question carefully

Some questions may require several readings to understand. Read every word in the question so that you are aware of all the information that the question has provided and what the question is asking for.

Stay calm
There may be tricky questions or difficult questions. Answer as many questions as you can carefully. Do not rush through the paper. In many cases, accuracy is more important than speed.

MATHEMATICS

Underline keywords

Keywords in Mathematics questions include before, after, first, in the end, last, at the beginning. These are important words that affect the final answer.

Check your working

If you feel that the answer looks strange, check your working. The easiest way to check is by substituting your answer back into the question and see if it matches the rest of the information given in the question.

Use the methods you are most comfortable with
You can use any method to solve the Mathematics questions, as long as you get the correct answer. This means that you do not have to draw models if you have another, shorter way of solving the question.

ENGLISH

Read the entire passage before attempting any questions

For the Comprehension and Cloze sections, you should read the entire text before attempting any questions. This will help you gain a deeper understanding of the passage and reduce the chance of you selecting a close, but incorrect answer.

Underline keywords

Keywords in English Comprehension questions include not, true, false, least, most. These are important words that will change the meaning of the question.

Break up unfamiliar words into smaller parts

If you come across an unfamiliar word, break it up into smaller parts (morphemes) that are more familiar. Take for example the word “anti-freeze”. “Anti” means the opposite of, and “freeze” means to turn from a liquid into a solid. Putting the two together, you can guess that “anti-freeze” refers to a substance that stops a liquid from turning into a solid.

Study all the options before choosing your answer

For English Comprehension questions, remember to consider all the options before selecting your answer. Some options may appear to be correct at first sight, until you compare it to the better, actual answer.
