Post-PSLE Bridging to Sec 1

Language Arts Writing Programme

Module 1 ~ Reflective Writing

A precursor to personal recount writing, this module focuses on training students to voice their thoughts and emotions skillfully in writing. Students will be exposed to different modes of reflective writing such as blogging, journaling, memoirs and biographies.

Module 2 ~ Personal Recount

Personal recounts involve the retelling of significant events in our lives that make us who we are today. It involves describing places, people, events that leave a deep impression on us. For such pieces to be effective, a writer has to incorporate elements of reflective writing in them.

Module 3 ~ Literature & Unseen Prose

Using pop culture works that have literary roots, students will be introduced to the world of literature. Students will learn figurative language, dramatic devices, characterisation and symbolism. They will be taught how to annotate texts and create their own notes for revision.

Module 4 ~ Unseen Poetry

What makes poems different from prose? Stanzas, rhyme, rhythm, metaphors and more! Students will make use of the SPECS and SLIMS template to study and analyse poems. To round off the lesson, students will try their hand at composing a poem on a subject dear to their hearts.

Module 5 ~ Expository Writing

Expository writing is a genre of writing that provides information and explanations in a straightforward manner to the readers. A departure from the descriptive style of writing students are used to in Primary School, students will learn how to adopt a simple, yet clear writing style that demonstrates objectivity.

Module 6 ~ Argumentative Writing

An argumentative essay is a writer’s attempt to convince the reader to accept his or her point of view. Such essays require the writer to combine facts with opinion. Good understanding of the subject matter, logic, reasoning, and of course, strong language skills, are key to crafting an effective argumentative essay.
