Past Year GEP Selection Exercise General Ability Question

Can your P3 child solve the following General Ability question?

When it comes to numbers and letters, one way to relate the two is to convert letters into numbers based on their corresponding positions in the alphabet.

For example, A corresponds to 1, B to 2, C to 3 and so on.

In the question above,

I corresponds to 9; D corresponds to 4;

P corresponds to 16;

Rewriting the expressions, we have

3 ∞ 9

2 ∞ 4

4 ∞ 16

The next leap of insight requires us to realise that in each expression, the number on the right is the square of the number on the left.

Only one thing left to do then: check the options one by one.

If you've done it properly, you should conclude that (b) is the answer.

5 x 5 = 25, and Y is the 25th letter in the alphabet!
